Junior School Information

This is an overview of the structure and organisation of the Junior School at Oakbank Area School. For more detailed information please take advantage of the ACQUAINTANCE NIGHT which will be held early in Term 1 and other parent sessions held during the year. Additional information is also available at School Council meetings, from Class Teachers and from the Junior School Co-ordinator. If you have concerns or questions do not hesitate to contact one of these people for support or answers.

Class teachers have the responsibility for planning and programming appropriate activities and establishing a learning environment for all the curriculum areas except those taken by specialist teachers.

We offer as specialist subjects: Chinese, Music and Drama.

In general, HOMEWORK should be a follow-on activity from work done in the classroom. If students are experiencing any problems or it is taking too long, you should see the Class Teacher or write a note. SPORT is an important part of the weekly activities and early in term 1, all students have water activities instruction. In Term 4 we hold a Swimming Fun Day at the Woodside Pool. Term 4 is also the time for our Sports Activity Day, which is held as a non-competitive sports day.

Regular ASSEMBLIES are held in the Hall and parents/caregivers are very welcome to attend these.

ASSESSMENT AND REPORTING: We maintain continuous assessment and reporting. Each term Report Folders are sent home, with parent/teacher interviews held in Term 1.  Oakbank Area School has a Behaviour Management Policy which highlights the need for students to be involved in deciding classroom expectations and consequences and also has a clear set of yard expectations, rules and consequences. Students who choose to break the rules in class or the yard are given reminders to change their behaviour and if this persists they are then asked to spend time away from their peers in either 'Class' or 'School Time Out'.

New Reception students will begin on the first day of the term after their fifth birthday. A transition program is organised for new 5 year old students over 3 weeks in the term prior to official enrolment.

The partnership of parent, teacher and student is a vital one and the staff of the Junior School looks forward to furthering this relationship.
